Default Date function in Excel that updates only when a doc is changed?

I only see a date function in Excel that updates everytime you open the
document, regardless if anything was updated or not. Is there a function
that only updates the document if something has actually been updated on that
spreadsheet? If there isn't a function, please advise of any other tools
that will accomplish this task.

Thank you.

You can look at the date the file was modified using Windows Explorer.
