Default Excel filter dropdown shows all data

In the past, if I filtered a column, then clicked the arrow on the next
column, the dropdown box would only show me the data that had been filtered.
Now it seems to show ALL data. For instance, if I custom-filter to show data
that includes "whole," then click again on that column's filter arrow, the
dropdown list will still show all data, not just those that include "whole."

Similarly, filtering to "whole" then clicking on an adjacent column's filter
arrow will produce a box that shows everything. What's going on?

I think you're remembering incorrectly.

If you filter by column A to show just the cells that contain Whole, then when
you click that same dropdown arrow in column A, you'll see the unique list of
all the values.

But if you filter by column A, then click on the arrow in a different column
(say column B), you'll see just the values that are in cells that have "whole"
in the same row (in column A).

Actually, Dave, what you describe is what I remember. The way it's acting
now is to show me ALL data in the dropdown on the next column...hard to
believe but true. Thanks anyway!

What version of excel are you using?

And are you sure you filtered correctly on that first column? (I'd put my money
on that, well, if I were a betting person!)
