Default To copy values in a column relevant to text in an adjacent column?

I have a spreadsheet consisting of two columns, one column text and the other
values.
I want to copy a formula down an adjacent third column that will copy values
in the second column to cels in each row that is relevant to the text content
of the first column. Can you please suggest how I can achieve this?
