It sounds like you might be adding a combo box via the "control"
toolbar. Try adding a Combo Box via the "forms" toolbar.

From there, right click and select format-control after you create the
Combo Box. Go to the Control tab. For input range, select the range
of cells that has your options. For Cell Link, select the sell you
want to have the reselt placed (this can be on a different sheet). The
value in that cell will show 1,2,3,4, etc, depending on the option
number selected from the original list.
