Default Excel & Copying Formulas

While working in Excel, how do you keep some of the formula constant while
copying and pasting? For example, when copying the formula =sum(B7+C8)-A40
from one cell to another, how do you keep the A40 constant so that no matter
what cell it is in it will always subtract A40?
