Default Freezing Autofilters

I have a large spreadsheet (9500 records) and 1/2 of the cells have
conditional fomatting and/or validation using lists. About 1275 cells use
vlookup to pull dates out of 3 other tabs in the same file. The other 3 tabs
contain about 30,000 records that are just plain dates dumped from other
spreadsheets, no formulas no tricks. Additionally there are 175 cells w/
hyperlinks to .pdf files in the same folder as this spreadsheet. Also the
file is shared to allow multiple user edits.

The problem is that when using autofilter the filters will intermittently
freeze. The pulldowns in any of the colulmns won't respond and neither does
"Show All" on the tool bar. The only way to unfreeze them is to turn auto
filters off and back on again and then pick an Autofilter dropdown and select
"All". This happens regardless of how many users have it opened or have write
permission (which can be a max of 3). I've "unshared" it and the same thing
happens. A friend said my PC at work may not have enough memory with only
256mb. I burnt the files to CD and ran them on my home PC which has 512mb
and the same thing happened. Any ideas how to fix this?
