Default lookup reference

I have column a and b. column a has numbers, hours; column b has a string of
text. cell c11(s/d) or c12 (hours) need the hours totalled up for s/d. Can i
search the columns from b using the first letter of the text (s) for search
and get the number value from a 1.5.

column a: column b: (text string usually starting with s/d or r/d
1.5 s/d run from 1 to xx
..7 r/d run from xx to xx
2 s/d run from xx to xx
3 s/d run from xx to xx
4 r/d from xx to xx
3 other

i am working column a as 24 hours in a day. I need to total the s/d and the
r/d's.
i would like to total all in one lookup. If not can i build a table hide
it to pick up the numbers.
