Default cells will not calculate

I am having a problem where formulas won't calculate. The cells just
display text!
Even the formula:

= 9 + 2

will not calculate. Is this a new problem with Excel 2003?

MUCH TIA, j

Your cells were formatted as text before you entered the formula. Format as
General and re-enter the formula (F2, ENTER)
Or, you accidentally pressed CTRL+`
If so, press again
