Default how do i change the format for excel to day-month

I am asked to change the format of a date that is day-month-year to format
the dates as day-month. It is to my understanding there is a certain
formatting in doing this. Can you help?

Sure. Just select the cells, row, or column, and hit Format--Cells. Choose
date and see if the format you like is shown. If not, and you want something
else, here's a short list:

d = 1
dd = 01
m = 1
mm = 01
yy = 01
yyyy = 2001
dd-mm = 01-01
dd-mmm = 01-Jan
and a wealth of others...
