I am assuming you have a great deal of text in a cell and your formula bar
shows multi-lines.

This is normal behaviour and I know of no way to prevent this.

I am also assuming by "vertical" you don't mean perpendicular as in rotated 90
degrees, which I have never seen in the formula bar.
