I'm relatively new to this but would appreciate your help.

Basically what I am trying to do in excell to create visual alerts in
the same cell that I am inserting values.

For example in the cell I am entering data (for example a weight in
kg) for all entered data in the range of 0 - 200kg I would like the
background in the same cell to show as green (highlighting within
weight limits).

For all data entered between 200kg - 250kg I would like the background
to show yellow (diplaying slightly overweight) and for entered data
between 250kg - 300kg I would like the background of the cell to show
red (to highlight being grossly overweight).

Are you guys able to assist me with a formula/method to help
facilitate this?

What you need is Conditional Formatting and I have applied this to the range
K 1 to K 30 (inclusive) in my Workbook.

If you type in the values that you mention into this range you should find
that you get what you want.

You can also examine the Conditional Formatting rules by examining Home /
Conditional Formatting / Manage Rules.

Above is in EXCEL 2007.

The topic for you to look up in Excel help is "conditional formatting".

My football stats sheet turns green as the wins column grows larger,
and turns red as the losses column grows.

I have a Blood Pressure Tracker where the conditional formatting
changes the cell background color if the heart rate entered is above a
certain value. I also have it so that value can be selected.

So you can even set up a sheet where you can adjust those "alarm
points".

I do not know how much examples help, because you actually have to
familiarize yourself with the conditional formatting tools and menu
actions/choices, etc. anyway, but those sheets have some conditional
formatting examples that you might be able to use. HTH

You can do it if you use a cell to reference to another cell, and use a
drop down list. It updates immediately upon selection, and does not exit
the cell. It works in a drop down listed cell alone as well.
