When attempting to click on individual cells, my mouse automiatically selects

If not the F8 key as Simon suggests................
If Excel 2007, try setting the Zoom level a couple of points higher or lower. Especially if in Page Layout view. Hit [F8]. It is an on/off toggle for "extending" the selected range.

But why only 5 cells?
