Default How do I reference contents of a cell at the bottom of a column?

I have a growing set of data which I continually add rows to the bottom of.
How do I reference the lowest cell in a particular column, when I don't know
if there are 10 rows or a 1000?
I suppose it might be useful to know the same thing rows too. i.e. the
rightmost value of a row.

The value of the last numeric value in column A is:
=LOOKUP(99^99,A:A)
