how do i use one cell as a calculator, or to keep a running total within one

Put this formula in B1:

Thanks, Pete, but what I need is to enter # into A1, then enter another #
into A1, & the result to be the sum of the 2 entered #'s, like a calculator, but within the same cell. any hints?
