Default Creating DDE link to DDE server in Excel 2007

I would like to do the above mentioned action. I have loaded an excel file
containing a DDE link into Excel 2007 and the links do work. When I type in
a DDE array link in Excel 2007 (using shift cntrl of course), it works.
However, when I type a DDE link (as example below) it gives a formula error.
The DDE server is on, since the opened worksheet Excel 2007 is receiving data
from the server. Can someone explain what is happening? Certainly I can
work around the problem, but there seems to be something eluding me here.
example:

=DDEserver|Price!Item
