Default Excel Formula using colors

A while ago, I was able to write a formula that allowed me to use the "if"
function to format a cell a specified color. If the condition of the if
statement was met, the cell that contained the formula would turn the
designated color. I have no used this formula in a long time and can't recall
how to make it work. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
