Default how to merge a non shared workbook

Hello all

i have a couple of workbooks that are copies of each other. i need to merge
them. it seems that you have to share the workbook before this function
works. is there anyway to turn this feature on with a workbook that is a copy?

understand that someone just copied and pasted the workbook to a different
folder, and now we have 2 workbooks which are almost exactly the same, but
different enough that i have to try a merge.

any suggestions?

If someone took an existing workbook, copied it whole, and made
changes, wouldn't that be the most updated workbook? If so, why would
you need the previous one?

That happens almost daily in my office it seems :) It's hard to
control when multiple people have access to a shared document. The
only thing I can suggest is roll up your sleeves, copy the second
workbook into the first, and start copying the new data. Then you can
put it on your list of accomplishments for the year, or add it to your
resume :) Or try to get the person who made the copy to do it.
