Month always displays as Jan
Hi,
When I put the formula =month(A1) to get the month for any date, it shows me the right month, numerically. However, when I customise it to "mmm" format , it always shows as Jan. Why does this happen? Regards, Vinaya |

That's the way Excel designed it. From the Help file for
MONTH: "Returns the month of a date represented by a serial number. The month is given as an integer, ranging from 1 (January) to 12 (December)." Because of the way that Excel stores dates, as a number since 1st Jan 1900,
that derived month number can also be represented as a date. As the month could only be 1-12, that would range from 1st Jan 1900 to 12th Jan 1900, so if you format that as 'mmm', in every case you get Jan. -- HTH RP (remove nothere from the email address if mailing direct) "Vinaya" wrote in message ...
