Because of the way that Excel stores dates, as a number since 1st Jan 1900,
that derived month number can also be represented as a date. As the month
could only be 1-12, that would range from 1st Jan 1900 to 12th Jan 1900, so
if you format that as 'mmm', in every case you get Jan.
