The Read-Only has attached itself to files. Going to Properties shows the

Are you opening files that are located on a network drive?
If someone else has the file open, then you may have opened the file in readonly mode. If you don't have access to write to that drive/folder, then excel is smart enough to open the file in readonly mode. Paul Marshall wrote: The Read-Only has attached itself to files. What is the exact message you are getting?
Are you opening files from external media like a CD? Or................... When you are working on an Excel workbook(file) Excel will create a temporary copy of that file. Generally when you close the file the temporary is deleted. Sometimes it is not. Then you will get the "this file is locked for editing by username". Most times a re-boot will clear it up but sometimes you must clear your Temp folder and/or the folder C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel Gord Dibben MS Excel MVP On Tue, 3 Jun 2008 08:13:00 -0700, Paul Marshall <Paul wrote: The Read-Only has attached itself to files.
