Default Using COUNTIF forumla

Hello, I'm sure there is a very easy answer to this...

For various cells within my sheet I want to use a COUNTIF formula to total
up the number of entries held within these cells. The entires are not going
to be same within each of the cells.

So basically if the cell has a text entry that needs to be counted as 1
value is there anyway around this?

Thanks
Robin
