I accidentally saved over a worksheet with another file. Can I recover the
original. I have searched and the most recent backup is from Feb. I do not
have a system that automatically backs up my files. I have tried auto
recovery, restoring the system to a previous date, searching my complete
computer. Any suggestions?

Any chance you emailed a copy to someone else. Maybe you can check your sentbox
or ask for a copy back?

How about any thumbdrive? Did you transport the file anywhere else?

Dave,

I already check both of those options and sad to say I did not. The one I
saved on my jump drive is from Feb. It got saved to a short cut on my
desktop and converted it to a .lnk file so I was hoping that the .xls file
would still be saved somewhere but my searches do not find anything. Any
other ideas??

For the future...............

Sysytem Restore does not save data files, only system files.

Autorecovery just saves a temporary file that is deleted when the original is
closed/saved with no incident.

You may want to read this...............

There is no Autosave with Excel 2002 or newer.

Autorecovery from ToolsOptionsSave is it. This is not the same as Autosave
which made true incremental saves at intervals and alerted you before saving.

Autorecovery just saves a temporary file which it deletes if Excel closes
normally without incident.

BTW.....Dave Peterson reports that he tried an earlier version of Autosave.xla
in XL2002 and it seemed to work fine.

I have also tried the Autosave.XLA from XL97 on 2002 and 2003 and does the job.

I thought that if it had a different extension that the original may still
be somewhere. The new one saved as .lnk and the original was .xls. It that
possible?

..lnk files are usually shortcuts to the real files.
