Default Paste from MS Word

I've discovered that if I want to paste text from MS Word into a cell
without making a mess, I need to make sure I paste into the formula
bar or else use 'Paste Special' (Text). Is there something I can
alter so that I can routinely use the simple 'CTRL-V' command?
(Word 2000; Excel 97)

TIA,
