Default Problem importing Excel to Access

I have a field in Excel containing numbers. When I import to Access, the data
is lost. Other numeric fields in the same worksheet are imported just fine.

This happens both with Access 97 and with Access 2003, and it doesn't matter
if I save the Excel file to tabbed-text or DBF. The text file shows the data
right there, but when I import to Access, the numbers just disappear.

I also tried importing the field both as text and as numeric format, to no
avail.

As a longtime user of both Excel and Access, I am aware that the programs
often can be picky about formating text and numbers. I usually can make it
work after numerous tricks, but I am now at my wits' end.

What, exactly, is in this "field"?

The field/column is a unique identifier for individual schools within a
school district. It originally appeared as "0051" "0051" "0051" "0052" "0052"
etc. I converted to 51,51,51,52,52. In both cases, Access imported the
worksheet and blanked out my data.

I would suspect some issue with the Access field. I would check its
properties.
