Default Vlookup function

Is there a way to have the vlookup function only sort the visible rows in a
filtered list? Or is there another way to have Excel find the first value in
a filtered list? Thanks.

Default Vlookup function

A list is filtered based on some data that meets some criteria.

I can't think of a situation where those conditions can't be built into a
formula (unless the list is poorly designed in the first place). So, maybe
if you supply some details we can come up with a solution.
