Default Replacing ?

I have cells containing a question mark '?' that I wanted to replace with a
blank. When I did a replace for ? with blank it cleared out the entire cell.
Is the ? a wildcard of some kind?

Just can't figure this one out.

Edit Replace Find what:~? Repleace with: leave it blank Replace
