I'm not sure if this question should be here or on the SharePoint forum.
Is change tracking automatically disabled when you open an Excel file through SharePoint Services 2.0? I tried to access it by tools/track changes, but Track Changes is greyed out when I open the file through our SharePoint Services team site. I want to make sure it is not an error on my part. I am the Software trainer and I try to be prepared for any questions my students/co-workers have and this is a problem I ran across while preparing my beginners Excel 2003 class. |

As I understand it, change tracking is only turned on if you share the file. This must be done explicitly, it's not done by SharePoint -- HTH Nick Hodge Microsoft MVP - Excel Southampton, England DTHIS www.nickhodge.co.uk "Mimi" wrote in message ... Ok, thanks. But what it looks like is once you open up an Excel file through
SharePoint, it doesn't allow you to "share" the file since SharePoint is actually a collaboration tool which implies "sharing". Once I open the file through SharePoint, I go to Tools, then Track Changes, and the choices are greyed out. Also the Share Workbook option under Tools is greyed out. So, am I correct in assuming that it is not possible to use Track Changes for files opened through SharePoint Services 2.0? I'll try and look this up, but SharePoint dos say collaboration and sharing, but not necessarily at the same time. I have a deployment at work and I'll try and test -- HTH Nick Hodge Microsoft MVP - Excel Southampton, England DTHIS www.nickhodge.co.uk "Mimi" wrote in message ... Ok, thanks. Tested it on our V2 Sharepoint site and simply clicking the link doesn't allow sharing or tracking, if however you 'check it out', the menu options light up. Now, I am testing remotely via telnet and there's only me, but I think the idea of check-out is to stop others changing the file while someone else is in it. You'll have to test this bit with a colleague -- HTH Nick Hodge Microsoft MVP - Excel Southampton, England DTHIS www.nickhodge.co.uk "Mimi" wrote in message ... Thanks. I appreciate it. Great. Thank you. That works, but what I found is it only works if you
check the document out from inside Excel on the Shared Workspace pane. If you just check the document out on the SharePoint site, the Track Changes options are still greyed out. Thanks again. At least now I know what to tell my students if they come across this problem.
