Default Weird format to formula transition excel 2003

When entering a date into a cell even after changing the format to Date
format, excel is viewing my entry as a formula.

Here's my process:
I choose format cells, date, okay.
enter 10/19/06
display shows 1/0/1900

cell display shows =10/19/6

I've chosen multiple date formats with the same result.

Ideas?

Are you entering an "=" (or a "+") first? If so, excel is processing
=10/19/6 as 10 divided by 19 divided by 6.

Try entering: 10/19/06 with nothing before the 10

(if you are entering 2006 dates, you can just enter 10/19 and excel will
fill in the rest.)
