Default count many with COUNTIF?

I was concerned after reading your first reply but I feel better now!

You're welcome. Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you, but no, that didn't work; I get the wrong result "0". Although
I'm
not quite sure what Excel is counting...
What I want to count is strings (if that is complicating everything), i.e
'how many' of this, that and the other in A1:A200; "this, that and the
other"
is specifyed in C2:C15.

This ought to be possible, one might think...
