I have cross-posted to microsoft.public.word.mailmerge.fields which is a
more appropriate newsgroup.
The good news is that it is possible.
I would partition the data into a set of Excel files, each describing no
more than 750 members.
It would be embarrassing to get such large numbers of email wrong.
I would first try getting it right for a single address.
I would then try it for 10, and then for 100.
Only then would I try using the real data. You may find that modules of
600 names may work best.
Does your friend have the right to email all those members?
How will he handle obsolete addresses?

What version of Office is he using?

We were given a spreadsheet with first name, last name, and email
columns. I would like to be able to send an email to each of the
addresses. Ideally, It would also insert their name in the body of the
