Default Limited Edition ghd IV Dark Black Styler

The blond sun kissed look certainly seems to be the most popular hair
color of this generation. Everywhere you look, whether in the high
street, in magazines, on T.V. or on music video's there is someone
sporting some form of blond hair coloring technique in their hair. And
by far the most popular form of blond hair coloring is highlights.
Whether a full head, a T-Bar or just scattered around the hair style,
they are the youthful look of todays.

The most important thing to remember about highlighted hair is that it
needs to be well maintained at home if you want to keep that shiny and
vibrant look they had when you left the hair or beauty salon. Before
you start any highlights at home maintenance there are a few factors
you must take into consideration. What you do not do is rush out and
buy the biggest tub of cheap hair conditioner and lash it on your head
in the hope this will cure all the highlight problems and disasters
you have read and heard about from magazines and friends that may
arise.

You must first ask your hair stylist if your hair was highlighted with
-

1. Bleach only.

2. Permanent Hair Color or

3. A mixture of the two, (where some bleach is thrown into the color
mix to give it more lift ).

1. If Bleach Only was used it's probably used because a good bit of
color lift was needed and bleach is the strongest way of doing this.
Bleach makes your hair expand therefore making it the most drying
procedure on your hair also. People with very greasy hair tend to lean
more towards the bleach lights because when they are finished they
react like a sponge and take in some of the grease from the scalp
making the hair less greasy looking. But this is only affective up to
two to three inches from the scalp. The mid lengths and ends of the
highlighted hair will not get the grease and will therefore be a lot
dryer.

The way you keep this type of highlighted hair looking its best is to
use a duel combination shampoo for greasy scalp and dry ends. Only
give the hair one good shampoo as you do not want to over cleanse the
ends of the hair. After that put no conditioner on the roots of the
hair as it gets greasy anyway, but use a spay on - leave in
conditioner on the mid lengths and ends of the hair. This will leave
an overall balance and shine to the highlighted hair.

Many bleached highlights can turn a mat or green color after a while.
This is usually due to copper in the water system. Old copper piping
in old homes or town areas, The way to get it out of your hair is to
rinse your hair in lemon juice and clean bottled water . Sounds a bit
drastic I know but it does work. The lemon will make your hair dry but
some spray on conditioner will fix that.

2. Permanent Hair Color Highlights.

This type of high lift coloring is usually done on hair with a blond
base color or one close to it. The hairstylist should be trying to
find a color that gives a Sun Kissed effect when the light hits it. As
most permanent hair color is cream or gel based these days there is
little or no damage to the hair and good light reflection. Often your
hair will be in better condition than when you started due to the
conditioning effect of the color.

The way to look after the highlights is to make sure the color does
not fade in the sun or through shampoo that is too strong. Wash hair
with a Shampoo for colored hair. Use a rinse out conditioner on short
to mid length hair and a light leave in on longer hair. Try to
purchase products with UV filters in them to protect from sunlight.

3. Color and Bleach Mix.

Years ago this was a trick hairstylists used to boost the product when
lift was needed for colored highlights . But in recent times the hair
product manufacturers have made products that work the same way. They
give a stable good high lift with a bit of kick to push darker hair
color that little bit further if needed. They are generally not
damaging unless put on very dry and porous hair.

When you get home your lights should stay stable but again I would
recommend a color protection shampoo and depending on the hair length,
a leave in conditioner. If you have very light fly away hair you can
use a very light spray on conditioner that is put on after towel
drying but before blow drying.

Many people worry about leave in conditioners being to heavy and
making their hair flat looking. There are many different light weight
products out there now to choose from. You will find one to suit your
hair by asking your stylist for advice. I always feel it is better to
have the correct product on your hair all the time protecting it
through the day, than one that you wash down the drain after leaving
it in your hair for a short while.

Lastly - Do not over heat your highlights with the hair straightener.
If you are using a straightener regularly you should always spray on a
heat protecting product beforehand.
