How can I compute the number of months between January 1950 thru
December 1980 and July 2010?

Hi

Use DATEDIF for this:

=DATEDIF(A1,B1,"m")

See http://www.cpearson.com/Excel/datedif.aspx for theory, the function is
undocumented in Excel.
