The cells are probabbly still text. Two things to try

1) First check the formating of the cells. Click on one of the cells that
was read from the databae and go to worksheet menu Forat - Cells - Number and
check if text is selected. change Text to a "number format".

2) Check the cells to make sure a single quote is NOT in front of the
numbers. Click on cell and then look at F(x) box at top of worksheet. Look
for the single quote as first character. Yo can remove the single quote
easily by using the worksheet menu Edit - REPLACE. then put the single quote
in the TO box and nothing in the FROM box and press replace ALL.

Not sue how you are getting the cells from the database. The problem may be
simply the cells were formated as text before you imported the data. Simply
changing the formating may solve he problem.

Check out the cell format.(it must be Text now) in which the formulas will
not work.

Change the formula cell format to General...If that doesn't work copy a
blank cell. Select the data fieldsRight click PasteSpecialAdd Click OK.
Now try summing...
