Default expanding subtotals

I have a button in my spreadsheet that creates subtotals. After the
subtotals are created, I'm hiding several columns so the user can see the
item, the balance, and the aging categories all next to each other.

If a user wants to expand one of the subtotals by clicking on the plus sign,
I would like to unhide the hidden columns, so they can see all of the data.
Conversely, if they collapse a subtotal, I would like to hide the columns
again.

Is it possible to hide and unhide columns when the user expands or collapses
the subtotals?

Any help getting started would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all of
the help...
