I have a thread called caching and no one seems to have an answer for me.
Someone else is using the same release of EXCEL with the same files and is
having none of these problems, wherein EXCEL macros are looking for old
files that don't exist any more. I am starting to come to the conclusion
that the kind of stuff that is happening to me can only be caused by EXCEL
being corrupted. Does anyone have any directions on reinstalling EXCEL,
hopefully safely?

if it was me, i'd export my settings, uninstall office. then i'd reinstall
office and see if you still have the problem. if you don't, then import your
settings. if the problem returns, it's a problem with your settings, not excel.

I tried detect and repair but it did not help. And, I tried the EXCEL macro
on another machine and it worked flawlessly with none of the inexplicable
problems. So, I think I need to reinstall.

Please tell me how to export these settings. Also. I have office XP but
the excel version is 2002 SP3., I'd prefer to only change EXCEL, not all of
Office, unless you think that's a worse idea

go through the program menu to microsoft office/microsoft office tools and run
the save my settings wizard. then uninstall from control panel and reinstall

Well, sad to say, the reinstall did not make my mysterious EXCEL VBA macro
symptoms, experienced on no other computer, go away - see "caching" thread
if you care. Can I just use system restore to go back? Or do you think a
new install is always worth having, once you've gone through the trouble?

I also am confused in that it still says Microsoft EXCEL 2002 SP3. I
thought SP3 was an update that I installed on-line, long after I originally
installed the program about three years ago. If so, wouldn't I need to
update to SP3 again from my, now, old installation disks? I note that I saw
the SP3 (under about Microsoft EXCEL) even before I had reinstalled my old
settings.

It isn't about uninstalling. For that, you would just go to the control
panel, select add or remove components, and select uninstall Office or Excel
I would think.

Yes, I do, though it's a student/teacher edition and may have some
restrictions on # of installs, though I recall Microsoft will give you a new
key if you tell them it is a reinstall of a faulty installation.

Do you ask for anything more than the obvious reason?

Before rushing into a re-install why not describe in more details what you
mean by

wherein EXCEL macros are looking for old
files that don't exist any more.

There just might be another explanation for your problem which wouldn't get
fixed by re-installing Excel.

Well, it's a little late now, although I am still asking if I could use
system restore to undo the reinstall and, if so, if I should bother. The
reinstall seems fine, although it did not fix the problem below

The details, possible sketchy, are in a thread called "caching" started on
November 4 or 5, as I recall, by me. I would so welcome your help, as no one
seems to have any idea why it is happening and it makes my EXCEL
installation suspect. To review briefly, someone created a macro for me in
an output template, that was to basically copy and paste some data from all
input files - the input files were to be all those that would be found in
the same folder as the output template - the macro would search for them.
Some of the input files proved to be empty or not have data where they
should have it and that crashed the macro, as expected. However, when I
deleted or renamed those bad files, the next time I would run the macro in
the output file, it would crash, saying that it could not find the filename
I had just deleted, or re-named. Since, I always got a fresh copy of the
output file, this kind of "memory" seems unfathomable to me. On other
computers, this is not happening.

Any ideas?

I looked at your other post about 'caching' but it didn't make any sense to
me, perhaps none to others either which might explain why you didn't get any
responses.

I doubt anything along the lines of 'caching' is involved but perhaps
whoever wrote the macro didn't cater for the possibility of different
relative paths on different systems. Post the macro (hopefully it's short),
also mention if any buttons to run code are involved, either on a sheet or
on a toolbar.
