Default name checking or cross-referencing spreadsheet

Greetings,

Our school uses Excel to schedule students in different classes and
periods. In one worksheet, there are sections for each hour of the
day. In each section, there are columns for each class. Under each
class's heading, student names are listed in separate cells (firstname
and lastname in one cell)--real basic and easy.

What I'd like for Excel to do is, after a student's name is entered for
a class, automatically check if the student's name has already been
entered under another class. And, if the student's name is already
listed, then color fill the two cells or flag them somehow.

Additional functionality that would be nice is allowing for and
cross-checking multiple entries of names. For instance, if "John Doe"
is entered into one cell for a class, and "Doe, John" is entered into a
cell for another class, the code could decipher and deal with this.
Other name possibilities are "J. Doe" and "Doe, J."

Thanks much.
