Default Microsoft Map is no longer supported by Microsoft Excel

Hi,
I use Excel 2002 (XP) and Windows XP Pro. When I drop on an Excel sheet a
command button or any other control from the VB controls toolbar, I get the
message "Microsoft Map is no longer supported by Microsoft Excel".
The problem does not appear with the controls from the Forms toolbar. The
problem appeared after I downloaded a demo file that must have been created
with an earlier version of Excel, probably Excel 97. I did not have that
problem before and other users around me do not have it either. What is
bizarre, is that I can copy a command button or another control from another
workbook and it works fine. What could be the problem?
I deleted the Excel10.xlb file from the "C:\Documents and
Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel" folder but nothing
changed except that I lost all my personal settings.
Should I have Excel reinstalled?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

first, go to the run menu and try starting excel with the command

excel.exe /s
this starts excel in safe mode. See if the problem has gone away.

If it has, you can look for an external file that causes the problems.
Likely locations a

make sure you don't have any strange addins install (tools=addins).
Unselect any you don't want.

remove any files in the xlstart directory below the directory containing
excel or any xlstart directory below you documents and settings directory
associated with your logon id.

Look in tools=Options, general tab and clear anything in the alternate
startup location (it may say "at start up, open all files in:)

Hi Tom,
I have tried to start Excel in safe mode and it didn't change anything. The
oproblem is still there.
I got another user to come to my station and log on to her user account and
the problem persists.
I have no addins installed and no Excel file in the startup folder (Perso,
Personal or other).
There is no alternate folder specified in the options.
At some point in your comment, you say:
.... If it has, you can look for an external file that causes the problems.
Likely locations a ... and you do not finish. I suppose that the rest of
your comment completes the picture. Am I right?
Finally, that I tried almost everything I could to solve the problem without
success.
What else can I do before I decide to have Excel reinstalled?
Thanks for your comment.
