Default The x (close program) in the upper right corner is greyed out...

I have no idea why and I have tried everything including regedit and
reinstall to get this button working again. I have to go to the file menu
and click on exit to get the program to close. Any ideas?

What happens when you start Excel like this:
Start, Run:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Excel.exe" /Automation

Alter according to your Excel version/location.
