Default Execute Macro When any Built-in Autofilter Button is Pushed

Excel 2003: Is anyone aware of a procedure to execute a macro when any drop
down button in an autofiltered list is pushed?

Specifically, I have locked all cells in a database range on a worksheet,
applied an autofilter to the database range, and protected the worksheet.
Upon pushing the built-in autofilter button near each field name, the
protected database filters correctly, but will not sort when the 'Sort
Ascending' or 'Sort Decending' choices are selected. I'd like to
automatically unprotect the sheet temporarily when an autofilter button is
pushed - so that a sort can occur - and then re-protect the sheet when the
sort is finished.

Thanks,
Jay
