Default General Protection Fault

I have loaded Excel 4.0 into Windows XP. I had to change compatabilities to
Windows 98 on the install disks for it to upload and changed the
compatabilities to Windows 98 on all the executables in the program. Now I'm
getting a General Protection Fault in module KRNL386.EXE @ 0001:8D80 which is
located in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. Is this a simple fix or do I break down and
buy the latest & greatest.
