I do exactly that and really have no problems. We had a very minor issue
yesterday caused by an upgrade to excel 2003 on a couple machines. On the Excel 2003 machines the user was prompted to save the read-only, hidden file. This was triggered by the read-only file being in an older version of excel. I had to upgrade the read-only file to 2003. So far that has not caused any problems on the 2002 machines. Good luck.
