Default Pivot link to database

I currently have an Excel pivot that's linked to an external Access
database. The DB table contains over 1 million records. This causes
Excel to use about 1GB in memory.

If I port the Access DB to MS SQL and link the pivot to a cube file,
would this reduce the memory used by the pivot (and maybe even speed
up the refresh)? Or, is there another way that might help reduce the
memory required?

TIA...
