Default Sendkeys and active windows

I have a macro that uses SendKeys to send ALT-W to an application, which
will open a new application. On Windows 2000, this new application
automatically becomes active, and any subsequent SendKeys command will be
directed to it. On Windows XP, this new application does not become active.
It's title bar flashes to notify that a new window has been created, but the
active application is still the previous one (which I sent the ALT-W command
to). This happens with both Excel 2000 and XP.

Is there a workaround to this? I would like the new application to become
active immediately. Thanks in advance.
