Default Excel 2003 text file generation slow

I have an Excel file that loops through 7000 rows (41 colomns) and an
writes the row details to a text file.
The proceedure takes in the region of 20 seconds under Excel 97 bu
takes over 2 mins under XP.
I have tried the following to no avail
- Turned off automatic calculation
- Turned off Screen updating

Anybody know what is causing this and what I could try.
Many thank
