Hi
first: NEVER attach files to these newsgroups Second: This is probably not an Excel question. With what program have you used to open/edit these files (Windowrd?). and is this program installed on your new computer? -- Regards Frank Kabel Frankfurt, Germany Vincent wrote: Hi. I had some important files (RTF format) on my computer. The computer broke down, but we managed to copy the files from the hard drive. They don't work on my new computer - I use Windows XP. Since my backup files (stored on a disquette) don't work either, the problem seems to be that the files don't communicate with my new computer, rather than the files being damaged themselves. When I try to access my files they come out as "óÑIØ|ÅÍc4ÿùñ#" o«±¸ù©îvU,ïº" etc. Only the files containing tables don't work, those consisting of plain text work all right. There is a great amount of info stored in these files, and I would appreciate very much if anyone could make it possible for me to make them work again. They consist almost entirely of tables containing plain text. I attach the March version of one file, and a backup version from August of the same file. If you have a suggestion for a more relevant newsgroup, I'd also appreciate any advice. Best regards, Vincent. |

Dear Frank.
The files were created on an old computer (bought 1999) with a Windows 98 program (Word format). I managed to make them work on a new computer (bought in 2003), but this went down in March. I don't remember which version of Windows or Word it had. I had a completely new hard drive installed on this computer in June 2004, and now in has Windows XP and Word 2000 installed on it. I hope this is a relevant answer. I asked an experienced guy for his advice, and he told me that the data are still in the files - the files are seemingly not damaged. I just can't access the content from the various computers I've tried. I'd be happy with any piece of advice about what to do with this problem.
