Default real time sharing in excel

Hi I have 1 laptop /win xp & 1 PC /win xp.
I can open my excel workbooks & edit on both machines but they will only update on the other machine when I close both programs.Can they not update each other in real time?If so please can so one tell me how.Both machines are in the same building & linked via LAN cable. Many thanks Chris

Thanks for that David C. I did try that last night , but no joy,however the tip about playing with the features worked a treat.
