What version of excel are you using?

If it's xl2002 or xl2003, then your personal.xls file may have been disabled by
excel.

You can check by looking under:
Help|about MS Excel|Disabled Items button

If it shows personal.xls being disable, you can try to reenable it.

If the file was really bad and excel wants to keep disabling it, delete that
file and restore a copy from your backups.

Default personal macro workbook

That didn't work for me in xL2002 - nothing is disabled, and there is n
sign of personal.xls anywhere, not even in help. Did they do away wit
it? Should I just create one

Default personal macro workbook

It only exists if you created it.

If you think you did create it, you may want to search your harddrive for
personal.xls

Windows start button|search (or Find)
personal.xls

You may have to change a setting to search for hidden files in hidden folders.
