Default Excel 2000 macro runs v.slowly when Excel is not Active Window

I've got a macro that can take a long time to run - long enough that a
user could usefully do something else while the macro runs.

However Excel seems to run v.slowly or when it is not the active
window - even if the active window is not a CPU intensive process.

Anybody any ideas why and possible settings I could change to prevent
this?

Thanks
