Default Excel 'file locked for editing' by <me, how to avoid.

Hi Andy,

I have never heard of this problem occuring with a file residing on a local
machine. Have you tried it on another computer to see if it related to your
hardware? Also, are you using a user profile that has customised Excel with
Add-Ins or other changes? If so, try a clean user profile and see if things
work better.

I have an excel workbook that repeatedly becomes 'locked for editing' by

me (I am the only user of the PC and the file in question). I can clear the
lock by rebooting.

The problem is - what could cause the lock to be erroneously set, and what

can I do to prevent it? The workbook is intended for distribution to other
users and I need to find a solution that will not involve them rebooting
between each use of the file.

I have tried the following:
1. Read many posts in this group regarding the problem. Although there are

ways to clear the problem once it occurs, I can't find a (relevant) cause
for my problem.
2. I created a new version of the workbook by pasting the worksheets and

VBA code from the original file into the new, and saved this. Rebooted to
clear the lock; deleted the old file and replaced with the recreated file.
Problem still occurs - i.e. opens and saves OK first time, then becomes
locked.

My environment is Windows XP Pro, with all critical updates; Office/Excel

2003 (without updates so far); Norton Antivirus 2003 Pro. The PC is in a
SOHO workgroup with some network shares set up, but no server or domain
involved. The file is not on a network share. Although I have experienced
Excel crashes from time to time, this problem occurs even when excel is
started cleanly, workbooks saved without error and then excel exited
cleanly. The workbook is not shared.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Greg

Thanks for your prompt response

The workbook in question is part of a set of near-identical workbooks, all of which reference an AddIn for common functions, so using the workbook without my own AddIn is not really an option, although there are others installed that I could remove. However, this problem has been reported on other machines that most likely don't have the same AddIns loaded as I do (apart from the one they depend on, of course)

There are three changes in my Excel configuration - My own addin, the Adobe AddIn for PDF conversion, and the virus scanner

I have some other issues that I am attempting to resolve with the installation of my AddIn, so perhaps I will put this on hold until I have fixed the AddIn installation and see if it is still a problem then

Cheer

Andy
