Default Buttons disappear after repeatedly running macros

My colleague has built a worksheet in Excel 2000 to manipulate and
interpret staff attendance information.
The worksheet contains a number of buttons on the sheet that are used
to run various macros.
The problem is that after running a macro repeatedly (12 times or 26
times) some of the macro buttons on the worksheet disappear. The
behaviour is the same in Excel 2000 and Excel XP, and it doesn't
matter which macro is repeated.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?
